Ars Electronica Festival 2019 Linz: We Revolutionize Music Education

The Neuromusic Education Simulator Project NES

The Vienna Boys Choir have embarked on a unique research and development program for integrating high quality music pedagogy in regular school education based on brain research investigations. In cooperation with the University of Zurich, Switzerland, the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, Austria, the University of North Texas, USA, and Athabasca University, Canada, a joint collaboration proposal for Neuromusic Research and Learning Analytic Simulator (NRLAS) development has been established under the umbrella of the Music pedagogy Foundation (MpF) of the Vienna Boys Choir in Vitznau, Switzerland.
The algorithm development for continuous monitoring and development of the best music instruction practises (wirth method) has been completed and proven applicable also to Mathematics, Science, Languages.

The cognitive, emotional, neurophysiological and neuroanatomic development of children and youth with or without music instruction will be subject to further research.

The goal is to develop a world-class “Neuromusic Teaching and Learning Analytic Simulator” using Virtual and Augmented Reality built on sound scientific research to improve teaching in general.

The Vienna Boys Choir and the MpF Foundation set out to revolutionize music education with the Neuromusic Education Simulator Project – NES.
AI Takes over Logic-based Tasks: Here Is Our Answer

  • Creativity
  • Social skills
  • Emotional competence

As AI takes over logic-based tasks, education needs to focus on elements such as creativity, social skills and emotional competence as defined and analyzed in the wirth method.

Goals of the wirth method: Joyful Learning and Success

For Students
Constant attention leads to success and joyful learning experiences
Positive impact on other academic subjects

For Teachers
Continuous interaction
Maintain attention

Joyful and efficient teaching and learning are our goals. Constant attention leads to success and teachers confirm the positive impact on other academic subjects. Our focus in teacher training lies on continuous interaction with the students to maintain their attention.

AR-VR Applications based on Neuroscience Longitudinal brain research

  • AR-VR
  • Gain experience
  • Recognize learning traits
  • Apply learning strategies

The wirth method teaching strategies are based on longitudinal brain research. AI helps teachers to gain experience quickly, to recognize their students’ individual learning traits and to react by applying appropriate learning strategies.

Why Does NES Matter?

  • Worldwide potential
  • Efficient
  • Scalable
  • Automatized feedback
  • Personalized tuition
  • Applicable in other academic subjects
  • Teacher-student relationship

With NES, we can roll out our know-how worldwide as it increases efficiency. It is certainly not meant to substitute teachers but designed to scale up training opportunities. Teachers receive automatized feedback and have access to personal tuition within a short time wherever they are. NES is also applicable for other academic subjects and last, but not least: Teachers’ shortcomings will not affect the class, teacher-student relationship or individual students.

NES builds on the wirth method: through scalable AI and immersive learning environments like AR-VR, it provides teachers with a tool to maximise the impact of their teaching.

The Steps toward NES Full Version with AR-VR

Step N° 1: MTLAS Dashboard

The Music Teaching & Learning Analytics Simulator (MTLAS) Dashboard
Portable version for schools within reach

Step N° 2: wmOTTS

The wirth methodTM offline Teacher Training Software
Available on USB stick

Mobile Applications

  • Pitch App
  • Rhythm App
  • Combined App

Available free of charge for the non-profit sector
Available subject to charge through official app stores for private sector

Our vision to realize NES is based on the 23 algorithm metrics of the wirth method, the teacher and student data of the MTLAS Mini-version, enhanced by neuro data in the MTLAS Midi-version. Finally, in the Maxi version, we will use AR-VR for the NES Simulator.

It is our goal to reach more teachers and children than ever through offering them instruction that develops their potential and brings them a lifetime of joy and self-confidence through active musicianship.

wirth method adopted in Chinese pre-schools

An Austrian-Chinese Pre-School Music Education System based on the wirth method will be introduced to China, marking a new chapter of preschool education in the country.

This summer, coordinators for the FVBC (Friends of the Vienna Boys Choir) Kindergarten have travelled to Austria to receive special training with the Vienna Boys Choir and the wirth music academy through various workshops, discussions and meetings. They will return to China for the upcoming school season to further train the pre-school teachers on location in the Austrian-Chinese Pre-School Music Education System. The FVBC Kindergarten will provide international and specialized facilities for pre-school education and shall be a unique example to all kindergartens in China.

The Pre-School Music Education System is the achievement of “Austrian-Chinese Music Research Project” which was developed by the Austrian and Chinese music research team under the leadership of Prof. Gerald Wirth and Prof. Yang Limei. The system is developed on the basis of the wirth method and adapted to fit into the Chinese educational needs and requirements.

On July 20, 2017 a press conference took place at the Pudong Shangri-La Hotel, Shanghai, announcing the introduction of the Pre-School Music Education System used by the Vienna Boys Choir, the wirth method, into China.

The Shanghai VBC Friends Choir musically opened the ceremony, and guest speakers included Ms. Silvia Neureiter (Austrian Consul-general to Shanghai), Prof. Gerald Wirth (The President and Artistic Director of the Vienna Boys Choir), and Prof. Limei Yang (member of Committee on Arts Education, Ministry of Education of China and Professor at the Beijing Normal University).

As the final highlight the first FVBC Kindergarten was launched in Shanghai, together with the FVBC Shanghai Centre, a non-profit orientated organization with aims to enhance music educational exchanges and co-operation between the Vienna Boys Choir and the Chinese side, and to support the development of choral and music education for Chinese children.

In 2013, the Club “Friends of the Vienna Boys Choir” was founded in Beijing aiming to promote the Vienna Boys Choir, its tradition and music education. Since then, the FVBC Yunnan Centre, FVBC Guangdong Centre, FVBC Shandong Centre and a number of VBC Friends Choirs were founded in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Shijiazhuang and others.

Annual Vocal Masterclass will take place again in early August

This summer, once again, the annual international masterclass for singers and choir conductors of all ages will take place in the idyllic Pielach valley.

The masterclass, from August 5 thru 10, will conclude in a public final concert on August 10 at the GuK (municipal & cultural centre) Rabenstein.

Every year in August, in the mostly quiet Rabenstein an der Pielach, the entire valley resounds with exultant choir music. Songs and chantings, works of divers genres, even world premiering self-made compositions by the participants, brighten the hearts. Gerald Wirth, artistic director of the wirth music academy, will lead within a week even the most unmusical people to the realisation, that everyone can sing and that singing together is always fun.

Together with a team of experienced choir conductors and vocal trainers, he enables for the participants, who come from various countries all over the world, a far-reaching view into the world of choir music; choir conductors of any degree of experience interactively receive extensive training in the wirth method. Additionally, manyfold handy-craft leisure activities – culminating for many in the annual model-boat race – nurture the spirit of both children and grown-ups.

In a grand finale, the choir shows the public, what it’s got, with a final concert in the main event hall of the municipal & cultural centre of Rabenstein.

The workshop goes from August 5 to 10, the final concert begins on the 10th of August at 14:00h at the GuK Rabenstein.
