The Wirth Method – an innovative model for music education

Cognitive scientists repeatedly confirm the benefits of music instruction for the development of both hemispheres of the brain, intelligence and academic performance, as well as social traits and creativity.

To achieve these benefits, Gerald Wirth, President and Artistic Director of the Vienna Boys Choir, created a method for both students and teachers to foster artistic talent and performance skills, as well as knowledge of musical theory through consistent, interactive, and fun-based methods. The teaching approach is holistic and incorporates associative learning. It integrates body, voice, and brain.

Concept and contents

The wimac e-learning programme provides a pool of standardized teaching materials for music instructors to draw upon. They are applied with methods to ensure that they be appropriate for a variety of group constellations, ages, and skills, to deliver high-quality music education.

Worksheets with required guides in digital format and for download:

These help to train various skills as elaborated in the Wirth Method, such as rhythmical skills, reading scores and their implementation in musical performance, acoustic differentiation, musical creativity, music theory and vocal techniques.
The exercises contain visual aspects – cartoons and puzzles of all kinds – and auditory aspects – sound samples.

E-learning for students:

This scheme runs online musical games directly for students to work with, as well as information on vocal development, music theory, etc., explanations, and specified exercises.

Instructional videos for teachers:

These are available both in DVD and online format. They support sound development and choral voice training, supply instructions to leading a choir, and include educational games.

The e-learning project also functions as a platform for professional exchange and support for the development of music instruction.

Benefits of e-learning to music education

Making use of technology in music education diversifies the teaching process and makes it more effective as it provides exercises to address various senses and types of learners in a structured and coherent all-round scheme of studying music.

The e-learning programme generates interactive learning. Students can learn by doing and can direct their own learning process. This is especially useful where there are certain difficulties that require further explanation and practice.

A prefabricated teaching scheme can help choir conductors to focus on music instruction related to performance, while music education, even the voice, as a basis for performance can be trained via e-learning. This way musical instruction can be extensive in every course’s setting.

E-learning makes the Wirth Method and its components accessible to everyone at all places and at all times. Most of our students are from overseas and cannot attend courses with wimac regularly. With e-learning teachers and students alike can benefit from the Wirth Method and Gerald Wirth’s music instruction from anywhere in the world.
